FCP fight back but fall short

FC Peterborough 1-2 Atherstone Town

FC Peterborough were unable to turn a much-improved second-half performance into points as Atherstone Town left with a 2–1 win.

Atherstone arrived as early title contenders, although recent results had offered FCP hope of catching them at the right time. There was also plenty of excitement among the Green Army to see Joe back in the starting line-up.

The visitors took the lead after a slow start from FCP at the back. Atherstone struck the crossbar, and with no green shirt reacting quickly enough to the rebound, their striker followed up to make it 1–0.

It was a difficult first half for FCP, who struggled to get going. The Green Army feared a long afternoon, with some wondering if darker days lay ahead. Alfie kept his side in the contest, producing save after save to deny Atherstone.

Then, just before the break, FCP found a way back. Ollie and Jame combined for some midfield magic before setting up Derick, who finished calmly to make it 1–1.

FCP looked a different side after the interval and began to take control. Derick came close to a second, but his effort drifted just wide. It was one of several chances the hosts would later rue.

Atherstone regained the lead following a free kick that left the Green Army questioning the decision. The visitors made the most of it, though, with a superb low strike curling around the wall and into the net.

FCP kept pushing for an equaliser and created further opportunities, but couldn’t find the finish they needed. Atherstone held on to take the points.

The return fixture is only a few weeks away, and the Green Army are already looking forward to it.
