Late heartbreak ends youth cup journey

Late heartbreak ends youth cup journey

FC Peterborough U18 2-3 Moulton FC

It was a big evening for FC Peterborough’s U18s as they welcomed Moulton to Millfield Autoparts Stadium for the second round of the FA Youth Cup. A strong crowd created a brilliant atmosphere, with plenty of supporters turning out to cheer on the team in green.

Football can change quickly, and this match was a tale of two halves.

FCP started brightly and looked in control during the first half. They enjoyed plenty of possession, with Joe showing some eye-catching footwork and Ashley’s dangerous throws keeping Moulton’s defence busy.

The breakthrough came from Joe, who danced past the defence before firing home to put FCP ahead. His goal brought back memories for the Green Army of his strike against Framlingham in the play-off semi-final.

Moulton equalised against the run of play, but FCP responded well. Matty put them back in front with a long-range effort that the goalkeeper could only parry into the net. The Moulton keeper had earlier taken a heavy knock, but continued after receiving attention.

FCP went into the break 2–1 up and looking comfortable.

The second half was a different story. FCP struggled to find the energy and spark they had shown before the break, and rarely tested the Moulton goalkeeper.

With only minutes remaining, Moulton drew level. Alfie produced a quality save, but the rebound fell kindly for an opposition player, who finished to make it 2–2. The setback visibly affected FCP, and Moulton struck again moments later with a superb lob over Alfie.

At 3–2, FCP’s FA Youth Cup run came to an end. It was a disappointing finish after such a promising first half, and a second period the team will be keen to learn from.

There is plenty to look forward to, though. Coaches Reece and Mark continue to develop the young players, with several already becoming regular members of the first-team squad.
