Following the disappointment of the opening-day defeat, FC Peterborough began with purpose. Within two minutes, Derick burst down the right wing, driving deep into the penalty area before attempting to square the ball across the six-yard box. Although the initial opportunity came to nothing, the ball returned to Derrick, whose fierce effort forced an excellent diving save from the Desborough Town goalkeeper.

Unfortunately, after that encouraging start, the visitors began to impose themselves.

A corner in the eighth minute proved decisive. The delivery found an unmarked Desborough player, who headed home with little challenge to give the visitors an early lead.

The Greens responded well.

Derick was again causing problems down the right, producing another dangerous cross that required a superb last-ditch clearance to prevent what looked like a certain equaliser.

Dave was beginning to get involved but was taking plenty of punishment from the Desborough defenders. The referee chose to let play continue despite a number of robust challenges.

In the 15th minute, Desborough struck the post from a deep cross, but aside from that opportunity it was Peterborough asking most of the questions.

A driving run from Aziz created another opening as he slipped the ball into Dave, who in turn released Vitor. It looked destined to be the equaliser, only for Vitor’s effort to crash against the crossbar.

Moments later, Vitor tried again from distance, but this time his effort drifted wide.

Following the water break, the visitors regained their composure.

A dangerous free-kick into the box initially caused problems before an offside decision relieved the pressure.

Peterborough responded with what could well be Liam’s pass of the season—a superb diagonal ball to Derick on the right wing. Although he couldn’t beat the full-back, the resulting corner created another glorious chance as Toby arrived completely unmarked, only to head over when it seemed easier to score.

Desborough then produced a dangerous run down the right, forcing Mario into conceding a free-kick.

Danny made an excellent save from the resulting corner, but from the second delivery history repeated itself. Another free header, another goal, and the visitors doubled their advantage.

Dave almost produced the perfect response before the break, battling his way into the penalty area under intense pressure and striking the crossbar. However, the referee had already awarded a free-kick for the original foul outside the box.

Vitor’s free-kick flew wide, although the defensive wall appeared somewhat closer than the required ten yards.

For the second consecutive match, Peterborough found themselves going into the interval two goals behind.

This cannot become the norm.

Desborough began the second half with another corner, comfortably punched clear by Danny.

Aziz then produced one of his trademark runs across the edge of the penalty area but hesitated just long enough for the opportunity to disappear.

Soon afterwards came the breakthrough.

Danny launched a superb kick forward to Dave, who produced a brilliant half-turn before releasing Derrick. Showing great composure, Derick picked his spot and calmly finished into the goalkeeper’s right-hand corner with one of his trademark finishes.

The Greens had come out with real intent.

A messy affair

Protecting a one-goal lead, Desborough began to manage the tempo well, slowing the game whenever possible while Peterborough found themselves conceding a number of free-kicks, some of which appeared harsh.

Dave then produced a powerful effort across goal that was well saved by the goalkeeper.

The momentum wasn’t helped by a slightly disjointed spell around the substitutions before Joe eventually entered the action, with Liam moving into the centre of defence.

Peterborough apply the pressure

With around 25 minutes remaining, Desborough had strong penalty appeals waved away before Peterborough immediately broke upfield.

A dangerous cross was gathered well by the visiting goalkeeper before another sweeping move saw Derick drill a low cross into the area. Aziz arrived well but lifted his effort over the crossbar.

The pressure continued.

Joe immediately added energy and creativity, producing an excellent cross into the danger area. However, Dave was penalised for a foul, relieving the pressure just as the hosts looked to be building momentum.

Substitute Ollie won possession brilliantly to launch another attack, but Dave was caught narrowly offside.

Moments later, in the 73rd minute, Desborough delivered the decisive blow.

Another corner, another near-post delivery and another simple finish from close range.

All three Desborough goals had come from set pieces—something that will undoubtedly become a major talking point in the dressing room.

Two minutes later, another through ball led to a shoulder-to-shoulder challenge, but the referee awarded the free-kick after the striker went to ground.

Joe once again caused his usual mayhem during the closing stages, constantly asking questions of the Desborough defence.

The referee correctly ignored an obvious attempt by Desborough’s number seven to win a penalty through simulation, clearly indicating that no contact had been made.

Frustration grew among both the players and the Green Army as several late decisions failed to go Peterborough’s way.

Ultimately, however, the hosts will know that the game wasn’t lost because of the referee.

A positive start to the second half wasn’t converted into enough clear-cut chances, while conceding three goals from corners made the task far more difficult than it needed to be.

The team is still adapting to the pace, physicality and demands of the United Counties League.

We’ve been here before.

When we first entered the Thurlow Nunn League, it took time for the club to find its feet before momentum gathered.

Momentum is everything.

There will be no panic from the management team. There is plenty of experience and support behind the scenes, and perhaps an away trip is exactly what this squad needs.
