This momentous occasion was a far cry from FC Peterborough’s last competitive fixture. The euphoria of that unforgettable afternoon, when promotion was secured, saw more than 800 supporters celebrate together as one community, led by our vociferous Green Army and academy players.

Now comes the challenge of Step 5 football. While the demands on the pitch have increased, there is at least the welcome bonus of significantly reduced travelling distances. The downside, however, is the increased admission prices awaiting our loyal Green Army supporters.

Let the battle commence

Eynesbury Rovers started the new season on the front foot, winning a corner inside the opening moments. It was immediately noticeable that, even when attacking, they left three players back, seemingly to marshal David and Derek while also covering any clearances into midfield.

Early pressure resulted in Liam taking a powerful strike to the face, leading to a stoppage just outside the penalty area. The resulting dropped-ball restart immediately placed the goalkeeper under pressure as he was closed down by the opposition, forcing a hurried clearance.

Within seven minutes, Eynesbury took the lead. A sluggish defensive display allowed a ricochet to fall kindly for striker Jordan, who calmly fired a right-footed finish into the far corner.

FCP responded with a spell of pressure inside the visitors’ box. A ball over the top for Dave forced the Eynesbury goalkeeper into a panicked clearance, although the collision resulted in an injury and the day’s first substitution.

Moments later, Eynesbury should have doubled their lead, only for Danny to make an excellent intervention, preventing the striker from rounding him and pushing the ball clear.

The opening 15 minutes were almost entirely one-way traffic. FCP struggled to gain any sustained possession, overhitting balls over the top and failing to establish any rhythm.

In the 20th minute, Mario won possession in midfield and attempted to release Dave, but the pass just ran away from him.

The step up in physicality was obvious. Eynesbury relied on a couple of energetic players while maintaining a disciplined defensive shape. Their numbers 7 and 10 were particularly impressive, finding pockets of space, protecting the ball well and dictating the tempo.

A mixture of clever wing play and direct balls kept FCP pinned back, limiting any meaningful attacking threat. Derek struggled to make an impact down the right, while David was starved of service throughout the first half.

Following Liam’s yellow card, FCP failed to track Eynesbury’s number seven. His cross from the left found Jordan, who volleyed home from close range in the 37th minute to double the lead.

There was another warning moments later, only for a close offside call to spare FCP. Half chances for Vitor and Dave before the break failed to trouble the visitors as Eynesbury continued to defend well.

Visible frustration could be seen from Shaz on the FCP bench, while the Eynesbury technical area remained vocal throughout, both encouraging their own players and attempting to influence decisions.

One golden opportunity fell to Toby from a free-kick. Completely unmarked inside the area, hesitation perhaps caused by a fear of being offside resulted in a tame pass across goal rather than a shot.

The half ended with another warning when a 30-yard free-kick found Eynesbury’s number 10 completely unchallenged inside the penalty area. Fortunately, his heavy touch prevented another clear chance.

The defence wasn’t tight enough, the midfield looked disjointed, and FCP were grateful for the half-time whistle.

Whatever was said during the interval failed to have an immediate effect.

Within minutes of the restart, Eynesbury were through on goal again. Jordan was shown a yellow card for simulation after attempting to round Danny, although it appeared easier simply to score.

Soon afterwards, in the 48th minute, Eynesbury did find their third. A simple through ball split the defence before a composed finish made it 3-0. The visitors dominated the opening stages of the second half, with FCP relying on desperate defending to prevent further damage.

Then came the response.

Vitor, under immense pressure and being held back, somehow wriggled free before threading an excellent pass into Dave’s path. Dave’s strength did the rest as he powered into the penalty area before squaring for Jack to finish and give both FCP and the Green Army renewed hope.

Almost immediately, Dave had the chance to reduce the deficit further, but his shot lacked power and was comfortably saved. Another driving run produced a dangerous low cross, although it was cut out.

Eynesbury later struck the post, but they were beginning to realise this game was far from over.

Game on!

After a stoppage for treatment to the Eynesbury goalkeeper, the visitors appeared more than happy to slow the tempo.

Vitor and Dave were now much more influential. Aziz found some promising positions and delivered several dangerous crosses, although FCP needed more players attacking the penalty area.

Jack continued to impress, while the Green Army eagerly anticipated the arrival of crowd favourite Joe.

Following the restart, a neat passage of play inside the box ended with a shot flashing narrowly wide.

Eynesbury’s number six was booked for kicking the ball over the barriers to prevent a quick throw-in, with further delaying tactics becoming increasingly evident.

Joe Time

Joe’s arrival changed the game.

He immediately did what Joe does best, twisting and turning defenders before unleashing a 20-yard strike that crashed against the crossbar with the goalkeeper beaten.

More dazzling footwork followed, creating another dangerous cross that just evaded Dave.

Joe was already causing mayhem.

This fearless young gunslinger — remember the name.

FCP dominate but see red

FCP finally began to play with confidence, driving into dangerous areas and asking questions of the Eynesbury defence.

Aziz was denied by the full-back, while Dave narrowly missed the opportunity to release Joe through on goal.

From a corner, Sultan showed superb control before appearing to be clipped, but the referee waved away penalty appeals.

Just as FCP looked most likely to score again, Liam received his second yellow card — remarkably only for his second foul of the afternoon — reducing FCP to ten men.

Who needs 11 players when you’ve got Big Dave? (Don’t worry Liam, we still need you!)

A ball over the top saw Dave beat the goalkeeper to the loose ball before calmly finishing to make it 3-2.

Moments later he was almost through again, only for the ball to run away from him.

Sultan attempted an ambitious Ronaldo-style overhead kick, but couldn’t connect cleanly and the goalkeeper gathered comfortably.

Eynesbury managed the closing stages well, keeping possession and using the clock intelligently. Their number six was fortunate not to receive a second yellow card after re-entering the pitch against the referee’s instructions.

Ultimately, though, there could be few complaints about the result. Eynesbury were organised, disciplined and dealt with danger better than FCP throughout the afternoon.

Summary

The second-half performance showed what this team is capable of, but at Step 5 you cannot afford to give the opposition a 45-minute head start.

FC Peterborough have earned the right to compete at this level, but the standards and intensity must now rise to meet the demands of the league. This group has the ability not just to compete, but to establish its own standards of excellence.

The fightback demonstrated real character and the introduction of Joe injected pace, confidence and creativity. However, those attacking threats need to be present throughout the entire match, not just in the closing stages.

The Green Army witnessed a team that refused to give up and pushed an excellent Eynesbury side all the way.

Now attention turns to Wednesday night’s trip to Desborough Town, where the opportunity awaits to make more history by collecting our first Step 5 points.
